You type romaji on whatever keyboard you already have and the page converts it to kana as you go, using the same exact conversion table as the romaji tool. A half-typed syllable such as "k" on the way to か is treated as in progress rather than as a mistake, so partial input never costs you accuracy. The target text is kana only, because kanji cannot be typed directly — you would type the reading and press space to convert, which is a different skill.

Words per minute assumes five characters to a word, which is an English convention that means nothing in kana. Japanese typing speed is conventionally measured in characters per minute, so that is what is shown.

Latin-script languages work on any keyboard, though accented letters need the matching layout or AltGr. Russian, Hindi, Nepali and Arabic need that language's keyboard layout installed on your device — each one says so before you start. Japanese is the exception and needs nothing.
